In ancient times, Durrës was inhabited by the Illyrian tribe Taulanti, and was a major player in the region due to its Via Egnatia ancient road (which led to Constantinople), and its access to the Adriatic Sea. Some of the empires that conquered this coastal city were the Romans, Byzantine, Bulgarian, Venetian and Ottoman, just to name a few.
The Port of Durrës is one of the largest in the Adriatic Sea, and this proves advantageous in the political and economic arena in the region.
